Detailled program description

The program is meant to satisfy the academic needs of the students of Spanish, especially Spanish minors and majors, while providing a significant and direct experience of living in one of the most relevant Spanish speaking countries. It offers students the possibility to enroll in two classes (6 credits)  appropriate for their level of Spanish.
The courses, the excursions, the out-of-the-classroom cultural activities and the lodging arrangement with selected Spanish families, are planned in order to develop a personal experience of the Spanish culture and history, and to improve the students abilities to interact in a second language (Spanish).
While the culture classes give then the theoretical tools to understand and value both past and present Spain, the conversation ones facilitate their interaction with the native society and its members in personal terms.
The excursions facilitate the students’ contact with a wide variety of places and local cultures, so they can contextualize and put to the test the classroom discussions.
Hosted families greatly help them to widen the opportunities to participate an in-deep experience of the day to day live in the country, and expose them to a variety of views and traditions. Madrid is an optimum city for this program due to the wide range of cultural and social opportunities for our students.
The city makes the program arrangements, the cultural activities, and the participation of guests speakers easier to plan.
Dr. Benito del Pliego, director of the program,  lived in Madrid for many years, which is a crucial factor to have reliable and fast access to all source of services for our students, including those that can be needed in a emergency situation.
This program provides a high-quality teaching experience to ASU students and it is a live-changing experience for many of then.
